San Giovanni Rotondo
The ancient village of San Giovanni Rotondo is particularly evocative. Walking through the narrow streets, you will behold balconies and stairways adorned with colorful flowers while admiring ancient churches, towers, palaces, and monuments. An unmissable stop for religious pilgrims and tourists is the Sanctuary of Padre Pio, where the friar with stigmata worked and his memory lives forever.
Trani
Trani will welcome you with its Swabian Castle and amaze you with its Cathedral, a superb example of Apulian-Romanesque architecture, unique for its position overlooking the sea. Castel del Monte
The castle was built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia around 1240, focusing its shape on the enigmatic number 8. The Castle dominates the Apulian landscape and fascinates with its symbolic meanings. It’s a mysterious manor, just like the life of Frederick II. As a World Heritage Site, it is one of the most visited monuments in Southern Italy. Bari
The capital of Puglia has recently revitalized itself, launching a lively and dynamic tourist experience. We will wind through the quaint alleys that lead to the ancient Basilica of San Nicola and the characteristic “orecchiette road”. You will enjoy a breath-taking view from the ancient walls towards the waterfront, continuing along the shopping streets, where the Petruzzelli Theater stands out.
Altamura
Visiting Altamura you will be enraptured by the beauty of its superb Romanesque cathedral, desired and governed directly by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Crossing the historic center and medieval quarters, you will meet the local bakeries with their wood burning ovens. Home of the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) bread and other traditional baked goods.
Matera
The city of the Sassi, a world heritage site, former European Capital of Culture 2019. Listed among the oldest cities in the world, it is often a film set for internationally renowned films. You will discover the ancient homes carved into the rock and a subterranean churches carved deep into the cliffs.
Polignano a Mare
Polignano a Mare, known as The Pearl of the Adriatic. Perched dramatically on towering cliffs, it is famous for its splendid terraces overlooking the sea and for having given birth to Domenico Modugno (Mr. Volare) The amazing view from the two bridges over Lama Monachile is breathtaking.
Monopoli
It is a town where you can feel the maritime tradition, which is alive thanks to the historical fishing boats in the ancient port. The ancient village lies on a strip of land facing the sea. Between the bell towers and baroque domes stands the Basilica, an emblem of eighteenth-century pomp/solemnity. Many of the towering medieval walls still stand guard against unwanted guests, their cannons silently waiting to repel raiders and pirate ships.
Alberobello
Alberobello, the capital of the “Trulli” houses. This UNESCO World Heritage Site captivates visitors with its abundance of these quirky, cylindrical homes with their cone-shaped stone roofs. We will take in the panoramic views and drift along the charismatic streets admiring local craftsmanship, all the while taking in this extraordinary village.
Locorotondo
Listed by the Touring Club among the most beautiful villages in Italy, it is enclosed in a perfect circle. The white of the lime envelops everything and enhances the intense color spots of the flowered balconies. You will immerse yourself in the characteristic pointed roofs, called the “cummerse” and made of gray “chiancarelle” (stones). In the ancient village everything is graceful and intimate, and a sense of order surrounds small treasure chests of faith and art.
Cisternino
Recognized as the most beautiful village in Italy, it will welcome you with its historic center and its four medieval neighborhoods, which have remained almost intact. You will pass through Porta Piccola, reach the airy central square with its beautiful Clock Tower. You will dive into the small maze of streets and open spaces, among whitewashed houses, alleys adorned with geraniums, stairways, loggias and arches. Step by step you will reach the Mother Church of San Nicola and the public garden with a splendid view of the Itria Valley. After a pleasant walk, you will have dinner at one of the many “fornelli”, a typical butcher shop/restaurant, to feast on the local roasted meats or one of their exquisite roasted “bowls”.
Ostuni
Ostuni, the white city. You will stroll through the charming narrow streets of this enchanting town, which overlooks the plain of ancient olive groves with the Adriatic Sea as a backdrop. It is said that there are a million of these 1000 year-old olive trees!
Taranto
The “city of the two seas”, with an important Greek and medieval past. You will discover that here the industrial and the historical artistic faces have learned to live together. You will enjoy a panoramic promenade and unexpectedly crystal clear waters. Visit the National Archaeological Museum MARTA, one of the most important in Italy, which preserves, among other finds, the famous gold jewelry.
The city is divided into an old part and a new part by the renowned “swivel bridge”, which connects the two seas.
Brindisi
This ancient Roman city is called “Porta d’Oriente”, due to its position facing East. Your walk will start from the beautiful and restored Lungomare (seafront), up to the monumental staircase with the Roman Columns. You will be amazed by the view from the port towards the Monument to the Sailor, symbol of the city. You will encounter precious testimonies of the past with the two castles, of land and sea, churches, archaeological excavations, and elegant palaces.
Lecce
The city of the Baroque will captivate you, transporting you to an open-air museum, where the porous Leccese stone characterizes every corner. A real city of art, it will welcome you with Porta Napoli, a monumental entrance to the historic center. Squares, palaces, and churches will lead you to the absolute emblem of the Baroque, the Church of Santa Croce. With awe you will see the Roman amphitheater in the heart of Piazza Sant’Oronzo, patron saint of the city. The paper mache workshops and local craft shops create a magical atmosphere, impossible to forget.
Galatina
The ancient village preserves the Basilica of S. Caterina D’Alessandria, famed for its spectacular Romanesque – Gothic architecture. Frescoed entirely in the Giotto style, it has been called the “Southern Assisi”. The historic center is also very characteristic, with its Baroque palaces and the Chapel of S. Paolo, in the past a place of worship for the so-called “women bit by the tarantula”. You can pamper yourself in one of the local pastry shops, tasting the pasticciotto, a traditional desert made with shortcrust pastry and cream.
Gallipoli
The historic center is an island connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The old city is full of ancient Baroque palaces and churches, built by the Greeks like a labyrinth, where all the narrow streets cross between the white houses and the colored cornices. You can admire history and art with the castle, the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, and the Church of Santa Maria della Purità, which overlooks the Ionian Sea where you can enjoy an incredible sunset.
Otranto
The beautiful historic center, with its tangle of white alleys, has been a crossroads of different population for centuries. A fortified city par excellence, surrounded by a blue and crystalline sea, it was also the scene of the bloody “Raid of Otranto”. The Castle is a large fortress with cylindrical towers, escarpment walls, diamond-point ramparts, and a huge moat. You cannot miss a visit to the splendid Romanesque Cathedral which houses the largest floor mosaic in Europe from the Middle Ages and is among the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean basin.
Santa Maria di Leuca
Located at the extreme edge of the heel of Italy where the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea mingle.
